Epigenetics: The Power of Changing Your Mind
our genetic expression
In a Monarch Family Chiropractic Direct2U Health Workshop, we discussed epigenetics, the study in the field of genetics that looks at how environmental factors impact our genetic expression (turning genes on or off.) Fewer than 5% of people, on the planet are born with a genetic condition – like Type 1 Diabetes, Down Syndrome, or Sickle-Cell Anemia. The other 95% of us who develop any condition or symptom, acquire it through lifestyle and behavior. That means there are NO genes for dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), alcoholism, headaches/migraines, and more. And, not everyone born with genes associated with a condition like Alzheimer’s or breast cancer, end up with it.
The question to ask is ourselves is whether or not genes we might be carrying have been expressed yet, and what we’re doing that might signal those genes to turn on or off.
What epigenetics is revealing is that the environment inside and outside our body impacts our genetic expression. The internal components can include our emotional, biological, neurological, mental, energetic, and spiritual states-of-beings; the outside components can include trauma, toxins, temperature, food, bacteria, and viruses. Again, 95% of us who develop any condition or symptom, acquire it through lifestyle and behavior. AND, components affecting our genetic expression include emotional, mental, biological states-of-being and viruses.
So, how do you think 2020 impacted your health and genetic expression?
The norm has become social distancing, quarantine, hygiene, strict cleanliness, facial coverings, avoidance of crowds, and an overall general state of fear of our surroundings, both the environment and people in it. Yes, precautions are necessary, but what genes are being turned on or off with our perception of this new norm? The average person has 60,000-70,000 thoughts in one day, 90% of those thoughts are exactly the same ones we had the day before. The same thoughts lead to the same choices lead to the same actions/behaviors, experiences and feelings. Our thoughts create our reality.
NEW thoughts, however, change you neurologically, chemically and genetically - which is powerful! By thought alone, you can activate new genes right away… just by changing your mind.
So, I ask again, how will you choose to think about going forward? Amidst this new rhythm, who/what are you listening to? Where is your focus? What are you reading? How are you feeding your mind and body? Who are you surrounding yourself with? Where are you finding community? What does your self-care routine look like?
Your body can not simultaneously be in growth and degeneration; it’s either one or the other. Be sure to watch our Epigenetics Direct2U Workshop to learn more.
